G is for Grace

Do you offer the “grace of presence” to your children?

Are you an intentional parent?

We Christians hear lots about grace, but do we offer it to our children? Do we model Christ’s grace in a way that they understand it?

Grace-filled family leadership is all about turning mistakes into opportunities for growth.

~Lead Your Family Like Jesus

I know there are too many times that I am “too busy” for my children. I get frustrated, tired, lazy, overwhelmed. I homeschool all four of them and I feel I deserve a break every now and then.

I must remind myself to rely on His strength.

When the devil baits me with my children’s disobedience {or because of my own lack of diligence and consistency as a parent}, I must respond with grace. I must trust in God to speak the right words and show the right actions.

It takes so much more effort to answer my children {and their behavior} patiently and kindly and seize the teachable moment, but it really pays off in the end.

I am too often reminded by gentle nudgings from my Father…I sometimes try too hard. I sometimes forget. I sometimes stop trusting.

trusting.jpg

When I stray from His path, then I get tired and lazy and full of self.

By trusting my God for answers in everything, especially parenting – because that is my number one priority – I am modeling for my children to trust me. I want them to trust that I have their best interests at heart, just as Jesus has our best interests in His heart. Children don’t always understand the why’s, and we don’t always understand His will, but we must trust and model that trust for our children.

We also must model grace.

If I am constantly harsh and unyielding, then it’s going to inspire rebellion and not obedience. I have to be a “yes mom” sometimes. I have to offer grace sometimes. I have to realize that sometimes natural consequences are more than sufficient for teaching a lesson. They don’t further need me to heap coals on their heads.

I want to be a fun mom who does the fun things and not the mean mom who always says no.

To extend grace, I must be intentional. I must be present. {Present means undivided attention – not on the computer while in the same room.}

I must know my children. I must know their hearts and desires and likes and dislikes. I must teach by example.

Only Jesus can fill us, but surely parents {more than anyone else} guide the way and help children accept Him. I want to witness my kids’ spiritual growth, as well as their intellectual and physical growth. I want to grow leaders for Jesus.

This is why we homeschool.

Grace.

F is for Forgiveness

Let go of the need to receive an apology or repayment for a wrong.

Do you need to forgive yourself? I know that is one of the hardest things to do.

Forgiveness is not natural.

We need God to help us and take that burden for us.

The price of forgiveness is           letting go of the need to receive an apology or repayment for a wrong.

Put His Heart in It

intentional blogger

Last night I tweeted: “God owns my blog. He makes my connections and brings me where I need to be. I have some amazing stories about that.”

Several asked about the stories. To God be the glory.

Background info first:

When I first began blogging in December 2010, it was primarily a scrapbook of my children. Because I’m not a scrapbooker. I have several Rubbermaid tubs full of items that I should scrapbook, but this is so much easier.

But looking back, I can see the plans God had for me. and for my blogs.

God has grown me – through blogging and through my connections with other bloggers and readers.

My faith increased as I learned to let go and let Him guide my words. As I let Him guide my priorities – marriage and parenting and homeschooling – and blogging.

I want to be an intentional blogger.

If the blog began as a memory book, I am now chronicling a faith journey.

**Tweet This!**

Here’s the Google definition of Intentional: “Adjective. Done on purpose; deliberate. Synonyms: deliberate – wilful – willful – purposeful – intended.”

I love it. And I am already willful. ha!

This last year, as I learned more about blogging and listened to God’s will for my blogs, homeschool, life… I realize that it all belongs to Him. I am His steward of these words and He brings readers, income, opportunities in His timing.

Be humble in the presence of God’s mighty power, and he will honor you when the time comes. God cares for you, so turn all your worries over to him.

1 Peter 5:6-7 CEV

I knew long ago that I am not a salesgirl. It’s not my spiritual gift, for sure.

So, I know that I must be authentic to endorse a product or book. I must love it to encourage readers to buy it. I do lots of reviews and some products aren’t my favorites but I hope everyone knows where my heart lies. When you click on an affiliate link, it goes to support my blog ministry – and my family. I don’t want to lose your trust by spamming you with lots of ads for products I don’t even use. I pray hard over the posts I write and the items I mention on my blogs and social media are things we use and love (or have in the past) or that I think will be helpful to readers.

Now for the stories!

  • God maneuvered me to Allume last year. It wasn’t even in my radar. {I’ve been disappointed to not be able to attend any writing and homeschool conferences these past few months, but hopefully, someday, I will get to go to others. any sponsors out there?} I connected with several authors at Allume and I’ve joined their eBook launch teams because I believe in them and their dreams, in addition to loving the books. These connections have grown into amazingly beautiful friendships. I am forever astonished at how these bloggers lift up each other. It’s not about competition, but cooperation.

  • At Allume, I mentioned offhandedly to a couple blogger friends that I’d love to get into editing and how would I do that? They took me under their wings and helped me begin my business. I owe everything to their promotion and trust and to God. I have been honored to edit several brilliant eBooks over the past few months. God appointments!

  • Recently, I’ve had a couple bloggers out of the blue contact me to be a VA. I hadn’t even begun to advertise VA services. I wasn’t ready, but apparently, God was, and nudged them to contact me. It’s new and a little scary. Trusting is hard – and learning to balance a new schedule is tough too!

  • I began using essential oils for improving our family’s health and to go in a more natural direction. I feel led to minister on my blogs in this area. My husband and I were great skeptics and I’ll tell you that it’s been life-changing and God has been opening many doors for us with this ministry opportunity.

So what is my spiritual gift?
    Teaching. Counseling. Encouraging. Prophesying.
I want to encourage others to fulfill their God-given gifts. To seek their dreams in God’s will.
      To be intentional in

everything

    we do.

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord…

Colossians 3:23

It’s all God. Do everything with His heart in mind.

E is for Everyone

We are commanded to love.

Who?

All of us. Each and every one. To love.

To love. To love whom?

Everyone.

Love Everyone.

It’s real simple, folks.

Let all that you do be done in love.

1 Corinthians 16:14

love thy neighbor

source: http://www.etsy.com/shop/TrulyLoveThyNeighbor/

So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other.Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.

John 13:34-35

Love is a decision. I read posts all the time about loving our spouses and children. If we need to be admonished to do that, how much more must we be reminded to love everyone else?

In light of everything in the news lately, I am disheartened. So much hate.

But Christians must not compromise. We must love. We are the examples.

Little eyes and ears are always present.

What example are you setting if you love one and not the other? What do your children think if they are confused by unforgiveness or bitterness?

Easter Fun and Tradition

I decided to combine history, science, religion, and fun. Cuz that’s why I homeschool, ya know?

We’re studying Colonial times in history. I don’t think they had Paas dye back then?

Coloring is math and math is science. And we did a sensory study – that’s science! (Honestly, I know that there’s a science with the vinegar and the different colors seeping out of the veggies, but we didn’t go all there.)

But, most importantly, it was fun!

Don’t they look like they’re having fun?!

I made a comparison chart for the girls to compare the various food items we used to dye the eggs. Apparently, I need vast quantities of spinach and cabbage and orange peels and apple peels or I should have prepped those dyes overnight or something. But those didn’t work.

We skipped the cabbage lines because they girls are convinced they will be purpley in the morning.

You can download the natural dyes notebooking comparison chart here.

I know it’s past, but here’s my Passover Pinterest Board. Start a new tradition if you don’t already celebrate Passover.

My kids really enjoyed learning about The Last Supper and celebrating a Christian Seder the last three years! This year, we celebrated as a whole church and it was so special. Here’s my family’s table centerpiece.

Lead Your Family Like Jesus

I am so pleased to be a part of the Launch Team for Lead Your Family Like Jesus: Powerful Parenting Principles from the Creator of Families by Ken Blanchard, Phil Hodges, and Tricia Goyer.

Lead Your Family Like Jesus

This is a leadership book.

This is a child-training book. A book on parenting.

And I love how those two things are meshed together and help me to analyze and express how I want my family to look in the future.

It’s all about goals, vision, values, priorities.

You need to see that future picture of success for your family to know what you must do now to get there.

An important question for family leader to ask is, “What do we want to influence?”

The key is specifying what carrying out your priorities looks like.

~Lead Your Family Like Jesus p. 67

By examining your future picture, you can make a plan to implement for success. Jesus must be the foundation for your goals.

A wise man noted that it was only in the past century that the word priority went plural. Jesus had one priority: glorify God.

Everything Jesus did was about…Exalting God Only. It was an act of worship…He pointed those around Him to God.

~Lead Your Family Like Jesus p. 63, 33, 34

My husband, Aaron, and I have been using this book to teach our Sunday school class for a while now and we’re enjoying it and learning so much about leadership from Jesus! We’ve all had some lively discussions. We’re convicted to “put our egos on the altar” and align our attitudes. I adore having some older couples agree with the book’s teachings and describe how they raised their children.

A parent’s attitude, I realized, is the foundation for how every day is lived out. And those days are the building blocks of childhood memories.

~Lead Your Family Like Jesus p. 93

What memories will your children have? Do you need to make some changes in your attitude to reflect your family goals?

believe

We’ve all heard “Do what I say, not as I do.” But we are the examples to our children and actions speak so much louder than words. Does what you do and say match what you believe?

Life, family, and leadership are all about choices. What do you stand for? How have you chosen family activities to match?

~Lead Your Family Like Jesus p. 65

The book has four parts – The Four Leadership Domains – that all interact like a flowchart {Indeed, I made one for my Sunday school class}:

  1. The Heart: The character and the values
  2. The Head: Your viewpoint and beliefs
  3. The Hands: What you actually do
  4. The Habits: How you continually refocus your desire

LYFLJ flowchart

Throughout the chapters, there are Pause & Reflect sections that invite discussion and real deep down thinking of your motives as a parent.

For example, in the first chapter, we’re asked:

What is Temporary Stuff? What is Important Forever? It encourages us to keep everything in eternal perspective.

Great quotes from other Christian books help drive points home. The authors tell stories of how they dealt with difficult circumstances, how they trained their children, how they modeled Jesus’ upside-down Kingdom values.

At the end of each section are reviews over the Leadership Domain – Points to Ponder. Great summaries!

I believe this book especially appeals to men, to dads. It’s a leadership book. I know my husband’s only reading material is online…or leadership books. This book really targets dads in ways they can understand, especially if they’re not regular readers – with bullets, flow charts, pyramids, headings…all this makes it easier to read and comprehend the material.

It’s a call to action for men to step up and lead. But we wives need to learn to let them and support them, even if we may have a different (not necessarily better!) way. We need to clamp our mouths and listen respectfully to our husbands’ points of view. See Tricia’s video clip below!

What’s your family’s vision? It must say who you are (your purpose), where you’re going (your picture of the future), and what will guide your journey (your values). {paraphrased from p.48}

Write it down in your dining room or family room. Get it pretty-fied and frame it!

Rank-ordered values alone won’t accomplish your family’s purpose or turn your picture of the future into reality. You need to translate those values into behaviors.

What’s in the Bible? review and giveaway

We’re so excited to review What’s in the Bible Volume 10 – Jesus is the Good News!

Think Monty Python meets Sesame Street.

Snarky puppets preach The Bible. I love it.

Check out the trailer here:

The Gospel is presented powerfully through these hilarious puppets and Phil Visher. They dialogue about the life of Jesus. The puppets ask questions and Phil Visher clarifies. These conversations help explain the Gospel to someone who’s never hear it while also engaging and enlightening believers on the facts and details.

My kids are entertained. They learn about the Bible and Jesus – along with Latin and history too! And I was moved to tears by some of the songs and portrayals of Biblical events. Amazing work.

We are absolutely LOVING these coloring pages about the life of Jesus!
