Prima Latina Review

Don't forget to "Pin" this post. It helps get the word out about my site. Thanks!

We really adore this company and the Latin programs they offer!

We reviewed Prima Latina from Memoria Press.

 photo mp_header_zps9aa8d9dc.jpg

We were ready to review some Latin with Tori and Kate. Kate had been begging to begin Latin. They’re a bit younger than Liz was when she began. Liz was about 8 when she started with Prima Latina. Kate just turned 6 and Tori just turned 7.

This introductory Latin set is recommended for 2nd grade and up. The girls are transitioning into 2nd grade, so it’s great timing!

 photo PL_completeSet_zps91680a55.png

Kate was super thrilled when this arrived in the mail! I didn’t tell her it was coming, so it was a great surprise! {I ordered Tori her own workbook so we could do it together.}

Here’s the setup. We didn’t really use the flashcards, but we probably will review with them after we get farther on in Latin.

The lessons are designed to take about a week. Watch the DVD. Read and review. CD. Workbook. We can do a lesson in a couple days! It’s the first thing the girls want to do each day.

Latin kitty watches the lessons too. Tori and Kate really like the DVDs. The DVDs are easy to navigate and slides could be printed for note taking. The pronunciation CD is great for extra listening and recitation practice.

Leigh Lowe is a great teacher! {and she sounds like home to me…} I usually sit and watch with the girls to make sure they understand and then we do the workbook exercises together over a couple days.

The girls really enjoyed practicing their Latin practical phrases on their big sister. We listened to the Lingua Angelica songs and the girls really love those. They’re beautiful and they combine a love of music with a love of language! We love learning the Latin prayers. The girls are so proud of their progress!

I love the emphasis on grammar. This helps them learn the details of English as well! Tori struggles a bit, but Kate is already a strong reader and understands the lessons well.

As a classical educator, this Latin program is comprehensive and fun and we love it. It’s a great introduction to Latin and sets a foundation for serious Latin learning with their other programs. Also, there are great supplements, like this copybook.

This introductory course Prima Latina Complete Set is $90.90.

The set consists of:

  • Student Book
  • Teacher Manual
  • Pronunciation CD
  • Instructional DVDs (9 hours!)
  • Flashcards

Art Ditto by Birdcage Press Review

Don't forget to "Pin" this post. It helps get the word out about my site. Thanks!

art ditto review

We loved reviewing Art Ditto by Birdcage Press.

Birdcage Press Logo photo Birdcage-logo_zpsa3a9555b.jpg

Art Ditto photo Birdcage-ArtDitto_zps3f1d652a.jpg

The kids examined the collecting cards before playing. They looked at the art and noticed the highlighted image on the other side. Kate read the descriptions of the art in all languages.

IMG_7567

Each collecting card has a theme: tigers, flowers, music, cats, boats, horses, birds, fruit…

You can see on one side is a close-up detail and the artist and year.

IMG_7570

On the opposite side is the entire image and the title of the piece in four languages: English, French, Spanish, and German. We practiced our pronunciation and learned vocabulary!

IMG_7576

The game is like a cross between Bingo and Memory. We all loved playing memory match. We did an easy version with just matching a card, then we played a harder version of making a memory match before matching to our cards.

Then ensued the most vicious game of Go Fish the world has every known. ventriloquism, secret hiding places, screaming and cheering. I was exhausted. It was all in fun. And there was no cheating or crying.

We had to have a bowl of Goldfish crackers to play Goldfish (Go, Fish! They knew that’s what it’s called, but they played it crazy!).

IMG_8253

Kate hid her cards in the lap desk pocket so her sisters wouldn’t try peeking.

If you had to Go Fish you also had to take a Goldfish cracker.

IMG_8252

The girls read the titles of the art so they could memorize artists and titles. Great for Tori to practice reading!

Some of the convo went like this:

“Kate, do you have ‘Fishing Boats on the Beach?’”

Kate flips through her stash. She nods.

“May I have it?”

“Maybe.”

Giggles. And Begging.

Alex only wanted the tigers, cats, or boats cards.

This is Alex doing the “I won! I won! Oh yeah!” dance.

IMG_8248

So, we love this game! It’s so fun, versatile, and educational. I want to collect them all!

Art Ditto Memory Game

48 art tiles + 8 big collecting cards
Museum-quality construction

horizontal rule

Play memory games with great works of art and collect your favorites on art collecting cards. As you play, you’ll learn how different artists depict birds, boats, cats, flowers, horses, and more. And you’ll learn words in four languages as you have fun with great art!

Christianity Cove Review

Don't forget to "Pin" this post. It helps get the word out about my site. Thanks!

We reviewed Freedom Ride: 12 Lessons of Faith for Today’s Teens AND “Tween a Rock and a Hard Place” Lesson Blueprints from Christianity Cove.

 photo christianitycovelogo_zpsb3aa66f4.jpg
We looked at the “tween” lessons first to see if Liz liked those.

 photo tweens_zps80cdb36d.jpg
In “Tween a Rock and a Hard Place” Lesson Blueprints, the 12 lessons {last lesson is review} are divided into

  1. Lesson Capsule
  2. Class Activity
  3. Discussion
  4. Small Group Activity
  5. Take Home Sheet or Other Info (occasional)
  6. Class Conclusion

While it is mostly designed for a church class or group, I read the text with my daughter and we discussed the issues. We did not complete many of the hands-on group activities because they were difficult to adapt for two people. She didn’t care for any of the slang and some of the syntax was difficult to understand. She would prefer straightforward, plain language. She’s a reader and linguist and does not fit the model of an adolescent. We make no excuses for this Western phenomenon of “teenager.”

Liz did not like this tween program. Most of the lessons ended in laughter because she thought the behavior examples were so ridiculous. {Except we extended lessons 2 and 3 with some great discussion about hearing God. And we liked the part about and “Finding your Purpose.” And chapter 11, about forgiveness, had a good lesson base.}

I think that’s great that she giggled through most of it and found it silly.

The gossip lesson was great for us because my daughter isn’t really exposed to much of this and needs to be taught why it’s wrong and what the consequences can be. In case she encounters it in future, because she will, and I want her to be prepared.

Gossip plays into three weaknesses that cause us to find it almost irresistible:

  1. It appeals to our need for friends.
  2. Gossiping about others appeals to our insecurities.
  3. You’re at a point where you’ve stopped simply accepting the behavior of others. You are coming into an age where you want to know why people do things.

It’s difficult even for adults to trust in God for His approval and not fall into the trap of seeking the approval of men and doing whatever it takes to receive a self-esteem boost.

While a few situations in the text were surely a bit exaggerated to get a point across, I realize that many kids attend school and experience social events my daughter does not. Because of being sheltered from school issues, she can’t fathom the social pressures that many of her peers face.

I learned a great deal about my daughter while skimming the lessons together.

  • She’s able to pick out typos like a hawk.
  • She understands many social situations even though she’s never been exposed to them. She’s a voracious reader.
  • She is absolute. Black and white. No shades of grey. Right and wrong and no in-betweens. {While this is exceptional in most moral arguments, many social situations require weighing in on the least evil. Discernment can only come from God and experience.}
  • She isn’t concerned about conformity – good or bad. She has her eyes on Jesus. I will probably never have to worry about Liz’s dressing inappropriately. She’s extremely modest in her tastes. I’m ok with that. She has absolutely no interest in boys. And she is completely against drinking and drug use. That whole black and white thing. I am very ok with that. We just need to work on her naïveté and make sure she knows appropriate responses to social situations.
  • She has a wicked, sarcastic sense of humor. Like her mama.

I think “Tween a Rock and a Hard Place” Lesson Blueprints is an excellent resource for a worldly group who needs moral guidance. It’s designed for class groups.

my tween

Elizabeth is 12, but she graduated from the tween program at our church over a year ago because of her knowledge base. There is no current youth program. Liz is in limbo, not being mature enough for adult classes, but being too gifted for the children’s programs. These Bible studies filled in some gaps that Liz needed, but most of it was review or unnecessary information.

One comment that irritated me was mentioned in an activity to use a cork board because “students are too filled up on chalkboards and white boards from school.” I just think it’s an assuming comment. Just a pet peeve of mine that all church activities for kids have to be fun, fun, fun and not like school at all. {The lesson called for tacks, and, of course, one wouldn’t use tacks on a chalkboard or white board. Perhaps they could have just left the explanation as straightforward.}

 photo freedomride_zps216d8368.jpg
Now, Freedom Ride: 12 Lessons of Faith for Today’s Teens for teens was more Liz’s style. Many situations were inapplicable – she doesn’t have social media accounts, for instance. But she loved the Bible based lessons more than the primarily social situations of “Tween a Rock and a Hard Place” Lesson Blueprints. She felt the lessons in Freedom Ride weren’t as simplistic as those in Tween Prep. She liked the more straightforward Bible lessons.

The 12 lessons are divided into 3 sections:

  1. How to Get Started: Building a Sincere & Awesome Relationship with God
  2. How to Behave: Keeping it Real All Week (especially Friday & Saturday night)
  3. How to Grow: Getting Beyond the Self Esteem Wars

The lessons consist of these components:

  • Preparation
  • Lesson Capsule
  • Materials
  • Lesson
  • Activity
  • Small Group Discussion
  • Help All Week

Liz preferred these activities and they were easier to do with our family. Even the littles understood the lessons behind them. Liz enjoyed teaching them to her dad.

Anything with tongue twisters is fun! They’re hard to say, but after practicing a few times, they get easier. Just like when we pray or witness to people.

Takeaway:

“When talking to God, it can start out feeling like we’re stumbling all over and sounding awkward. If we practice, it starts to feel normal…and good.”

We especially love the idea of a Toothbrush Prayer.

“Everyone brushes their teeth before going out:
Lord…Be like my jacket and zip around me. Let temptations bounce off of You and rise up to heaven, where you can pop them like bubbles. Help me to keep staying me….in You!
Think of events coming up this week where you might say the Toothbrush Prayer before going to them.”

The kazoo activity was an important lesson in having us eliminate distractions so we can better hear God’s will. The noise from the kazoo drowned out our verse recitations so others couldn’t hear. Just like TV and other “idols” drown out God’s voice.

I liked the lessons on prayer. We had great lessons on The Lord’s Prayer and why it’s just a model for us to pray our own prayers. These lessons also helped spark a conversation about “proper” prayer for self needs and intercessory prayer – and being in God’s will. Also, we talked about the difficulty of waiting on God to answer prayer and when we don’t like His answers. Hard lessons for a little girl. I hope we can re-start our mom-daughter journal and pray together more.

I very much liked the compassion challenge and we had a family discussion about putting ourselves I someone else’s shoes. The love cards and love journal in the last lesson are now part of our regular Bible lessons.

While some of the examples were inapplicable to our family, the lessons were solid and provided Bible verses to back them up. {some of the Bible verses were misprinted, I think, though since they didn’t seem to apply the lesson or were transposed.}

The lessons in “Tween a Rock and a Hard Place” Lesson Blueprints and Freedom Ride: 12 Lessons of Faith for Today’s Teens are fun and engaging and I can see how they would be attractive for youth groups.

“Tween a Rock and a Hard Place” Lesson Blueprints is a $29 download.

Freedom Ride: 12 Lessons of Faith for Today’s Teens is a $29 download.

Philosophy Adventure Review and Giveaway

Don't forget to "Pin" this post. It helps get the word out about my site. Thanks!

We are thrilled to review Philosophy AdventureTM – Pre-Socratics by Homeschool Adventure Co. . Liz is already earning high school credit with this!

Philosophy Adventure
In the introduction, it states:

“We consider ourselves students rather than scholars. Life-long learners.”

I couldn’t agree more. I’ve met many teachers, parents, and homeschoolers who did not seem to adhere to that idea. I pity them. I love learning along with my children. They’re missing out!

I love these weekly three assignments (colored coded in the Reader to find easily):

  1. Write Skillfully.
  2. Think Critically.
  3. Speak Articulately.
I enjoy seeing the timelines showing the Biblical and political contemporaries of the philosophers. The Bible references really help us to imagine the lives of philosophers and people in context.
Elizabeth read the first two lessons and completed those writing assignments in one day. Shh, I didn’t tell her that one lesson takes a week! She absolutely loves it and her favorite thing is quizzing me on the philosophers and trivia from her reading.
I am amazed by the variety of subjects in one volume – math, science, literature, history, geography. The research that must have gone into this astounds me! I plan to study along with my daughter. It’s just fascinating. And I’ll be able to answer her trivia questions!
Liz and I both really like the scholarly quotes from literature and history and the Bible and the kind but humorous narration. It’s encouraging and motivating to want to try our best. I especially hope to encourage my daughter Liz to public speaking. I know she is gifted in this, but needs training and I think this is perfect for her.
Liz loves the Anatomy of a Biographical Narrative. She loves lists and checklists and enjoys the layout of the Reader. We both enjoy the format of the Reader and it’s very easy to navigate and read the different sections.
The lessons are divided into eight philosophers:

There are seven components in each lesson:

  1. The Philosopher’s Story
  2. Write
  3. Think
  4. Speak
  5. Geography
  6. School of Thought
  7. Contrast – source material and Biblical Worldview

This curriculum can be adapted for a four or five-day schedule. It can be used alone for high school credit {1 semester for each: English composition, history/geography, speech/communications, logic/critical thinking} or as a supplement to other studies.

The student resources are great notebooking tools.

Journal pages, maps, vocabulary pages, creative and critical thinking pages, and comprehension questions.

The numerous teacher resources are well-organized

. Vocabulary, memory cards, journal pages, notebook pages, maps, timelines, quizzes, checklists, creative writing.

At the end of the Reader are numerous checklists, writing assignments, and appendices to help in the educational journey. These checklists are very similar to the ones I provided my students when I taught middle school, high school, and college writing!

The Reader is a colorful text filled with relevant images, philosopher stories, writing lessons, critical thinking lessons, public speaking lessons, historical geography, primary sources, and a biblical worldview analysis. It also contains detailed writing checklists and delightful creative writing prompts.
The Student Workbook includes philosopher notebook pages, mapping assignments, quizzes, tests, and more.
The Teacher’s Resources includes keys to the quizzes, tests, and mapping assignments, timelines, and “at-a-glance” instructions designed to simplify your role as instructor.

A Parent’s Playbook for Learning Review

Don't forget to "Pin" this post. It helps get the word out about my site. Thanks!

Find out how to teach your child effective learning strategies. (Plus when and how to use them!)

Did you miss my post on learning styles?

kidzmet-review.jpg

The Kidzmet company is near and dear to my love of learning and the study of how humans learn. What is your child meant to become? How can you help him or her achieve his or her potential?

Because every child deserves to feel inspired, admired, motivated, engaged and enriched. Let us help you nurture your child's unique spirit

I received A Parent’s Playbook for Learning to review.

Here are samples from A Parent’s Playbook for Learning.

This general TOC lists the chapters covering all learners.

Here’s the TOC from my Personal Playbook for Victoria.

Most of us assume extraverts are social and introverts are wallflowers, but it’s more complex than that.

Here are the personality types listed in the Kidzmet books.

Judgers are not negative (our Christian beliefs and society would like us to think so!), but they tend to weigh pros and cons of situations and how people react to certain environments. They need to know options to feel comfortable.

Perceivers are more aware of themselves and others and the motivations that make us act certain ways.

Here is Victoria’s personal profile from the website. You can see the three sections it’s broken into: learning style, preferred teaching approach, and intelligences.

Obviously, I’m her teacher since we homeschool and the program is adaptable to work with parent-teacher relationships. For homeschoolers, this is successful to help explain to the other parent who may not interact in a main teaching capacity, or other family members or tutors, co-op instructors, and other extra-curricular leaders.

8 types of kids–8 types of learners. Which one is your child?

Free personality quiz for kids!

Since Tori is my most different child, I want to make sure I accommodate her needs. I have the whole kit for her. She learns differently from myself and her siblings. She is extremely sensitive and I don’t want her to get frustrated and hate learning. I am so thankful for my different child who makes me think and rethink how to teach her. Her gentle heart makes me slow down and reevaluate why I do anything. I trust she will grow up to do radical things for God’s glory!

A different birth story

Don't forget to "Pin" this post. It helps get the word out about my site. Thanks!

Leah A. Highfill writes her testimony of her frightening pregnancy causing a grave illness and her road to recovery in childbirth – and God’s grace throughout.

Expecting Grace:

The Miraculous Survival Story of a

Hyperemesis Gravidarum Pregnancy

by Leah A. Highfill

Most of us moms have pregnancy and birth stories we love to share. Others, maybe not so much.

But this isn’t about me or you.

This is Leah’s pregnancy story. It’s unbelievable.

This is an amazing testimony of God’s grace and redemption through childbirth. a mother’s story of loving her children more than herself, even while they’re in the womb, even through life threatening and widely misunderstood illness. This story needs to be read! It needs to be told. It needs to be shouted from the rooftops.

expecting-grace-600x800

I had heard about women with this illness, Hyperemesis gravidarum. I never realized how it must be for a pregnant lady to experience. I know that nausea is the worst feeling in the world and I cannot imagine going through it to that extent for an entire pregnancy – or ever allowing myself to become pregnant again.

I commend Leah for her story of God’s grace and for loving her children so much to struggle through those pregnancies – not once, but twice.

This is an eye-opening testimony of the lack of knowledge of some doctors and how our “conversation” can change lives. I love that Leah’s fortitude and attitude helped that one doctor realize God was with her. She planted a seed in his heart.

This book also helped me to realize that there are needs out there that I didn’t even know existed. I’ve never been one to ask for help. So perhaps I can open my eyes and heart a little more to realize the needs of others, pregnant or not.

Get a glimpse into the miracle here.
